Using iPad completed a number of applications, some of them homemade, dolphin researcher Jack Kassewitz can interact with Merlin, a young dolphin 2 years old. Interaction was the first step to create what is called Kassewitz as the language of symbolic, something that not only allows humans and marine mammals that can interact easily, but also potentially create a universal tool for human translators.
“For several years we know the problems in creating an artificial language between humans and dolphins is the speed of acquisition of the human brain, which can not adapt to the brains of dolphins,” said Kassewitz, president of Global Heart, a nonprofit research dolphins. “The range of acoustic dolphins are very wide, while what we have is so limited, and we react to the speed of their voice so slow.”
Kassewitz try to use computer hardware, which can process information much faster than the human brain, a special software for recording real time data, and a microphone in the water.
During the last two years, Kassewitz have explored the potential of the human interface-a dolphin using Panasonic Toughbook 19 and the iPad. Experiments using the iPad show promising results, whereas experiments using the Toughbook will begin in July. Experiments will be conducted at the Dolphin Discovery, Puerto Aventuras, Mexico, which has facilities for swimming with dolphins. The final objective is to develop a system of symbols and sounds in accordance with the objects and concepts for humans and dolphins to communicate.
